Copyright is not black and white, and therefore any copyright issues are open to interpretation.
Nobody can copyright straight forward names, places, numbers etc.
for example you could not copyright, any of the following
LONDON,
FOOTBALL CLUB,
2012.
RED, WHITE, BLUE
Where copyright begins is when you start to combine images with names, places etc.
But even this is subject to interpretation.
The best way to decide about copyright issues is
to put yourself in the position of a high court judge.
Then ask yourself honestly
is my design a copy,
or is it different enough with enough changes to be my own design.
There is never going to be an exact answer.
